World Press Photo Awards

To World Press Photo Awards που στη γλώσσα μας θα μεταφράζαμε παγκόσμιο βραβείο δημοσιογραφικής φωτογραφίας, είναι ένας διεθνής διαγωνισμός με ακριβώς το αντικείμενο που περιγράφει.

Το φετινό βραβείο του 54ου φετινού διαγωνισμού, κέρδισε η φωτογραφία που βλέπετε αριστερά.

Πρόκειται για το συγκλονιστικό πορτρέτο μιας νεαρής Αφγανής με κομμένη τη μύτη, που κακοποιήθηκε από το σύζυγό της.

Η φωτογραφία  ανήκει στον Νοτιοαφρικανό φωτογράφο  Jodi Bieber.

Η γυναίκα της φωτογραφίας είναι η...
18 ετών  Bibi Aisa από την επαρχία Ορουζγκάν στο Αφγανιστάν, που είχε εγκαταλείψει το σύζυγό της λέγοντας ότι την κακοποιούσε. Τότε, ο διοικητής των Ταλιμπάν, έδωσε εντολή για την 18χρονη να αντιμετωπίσει τη δικαιοσύνη και ο σύζυγός της της έκοψε τη μύτη και τα αυτιά.

Είναι σίγουρα μια απίστευτα σκληρή εικόνα που στέλνει ένα πολύ δυνατό μήνυμα στον κόσμο. Περίπου το 50% του πληθυσμού είναι γυναίκες, πολλές από τις οποίες ζουν ακόμη κάτω από άθλιες συνθήκες και δοκιμάζονται από τη βία. Έίναι ένα μήνυμα που πρέπει να ληφθεί από τους "κρατούντες" την τύχη του κόσμου στα χέρια τους, πολύ σοβαρά υπ' όψιν.

Με την ευκαιρία αυτής της ανάρτησης, σας έχω παρακάτω μερικές βραβευμένες φωτογραφίες του World Press Photo από το 2000 και εντεύθεν (τα τελευταία δέκα χρόνια δηλαδή) που τις επέλεξα με την δική μου οπτική γωνία (αυτές που θα ήθελα να έχω "συλλάβει" εγώ) μια ανατριχιαστική του 1984 και δυο ακόμα πολύ "διάσημες φωτό". Σας έχω μαζί και πληροφορίες για την κάθε φωτογραφία που όμως είναι στην Αγγλική γλώσσα.

Caption: The fingers of malnourished Alassa Galisou (1) are pressed against the lips of his mother Fatou Ousseini at an emergency feeding center. One of the worst droughts in recent times, together with a particularly heavy plague of locusts that had destroyed the previous year's harvest, left millions of people severely short of food. Heavy rains promised well for the 2005 crops, but hindered aid workers bringing supplies. Relief had been slow to come. Accusations were leveled variously blaming the United Nations, Western governments, the international aid community and officials in Niger itself for failing to respond early enough to an imminent crisis.

Caption: A mother cares for her son, sick with Hepatitis E, in a hospital in West Darfur. They have been displaced by the conflict in Darfur. The region saw one of the worst humanitarian crises of the year following attacks by Arab militias, allegedly backed by the government, on the local black African populace. Over 150,000 people were estimated to have died, and some 2 million displaced in what was regarded as a form of ethnic cleansing. The militias were accused of war crimes, although the United Nations stopped short of declaring their actions genocide. After strong international pressure, the Sudanese government agreed to disarm the leading Arab militias, but despite the threat of UN sanctions little appeared to be done on the ground.

Caption: A child loots a piece of meat at the main commercial seaport. In the last week of February looters raided aid-agency warehouses, making off with hundreds of tons of food and commodities. News of oncoming rebel armies had thrown the streets into chaos. Looting, hijacking and rioting were widespread. For some months, opposition to President Jean-Bertrand Aristide had been growing in both violence and intensity. Originally heralded as a savior of the poor, Aristide was increasingly seen as corrupt and inefficient. Matters reached a head on 5 February 2004 when rebel forces seized Gonaïves, Haiti's fourth-largest city, and went on to take other towns around the country. On 29 February, President Aristide resigned and left the country.

Caption: An Iraqi man comforts his four-year-old son at a holding center for prisoners of war, in the base camp of the US Army 101st Airborne Division near An Najaf. The boy had become terrified when, according to orders, his father was hooded and handcuffed. A soldier later severed the plastic handcuffs so that the man could comfort his child. Hoods were placed over detainees' heads because they were quicker to apply than blindfolds. The military said the bags were used to disorient prisoners and protect their identities. It is not known what happened to the man or the boy.

Caption: A boy holds his dead father's trousers as he squats beside the spot where his father is to be buried, surrounded by soldiers and villagers digging graves for victims of an earthquake. The earthquake, measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale, struck on June 23. Dozens of villages were destroyed and hundreds of people killed across the province.

Caption: The body of a one-year-old boy who died of dehydration is prepared for burial at Jalozai refugee camp. The child's family, originally from North Afghanistan, had sought refuge in Pakistan from political instability and the consequences of drought. The family gave the photographer permission to attend as they washed and wrapped his body in a white funeral shroud, according to Muslim tradition. In the overcrowded Jalozai camp, 80,000 refugees from Afghanistan endured squalid conditions. Decades of political instability and drought drove millions of people over the border into Pakistan. By June, Jalozai could not cope with the numbers, and food and shelter were scarce. Although relief workers tried to provide basic health services, children died from disease or dehydration. Eight months later, the United Nations closed the camp, moving refugees to other areas.

Bush accused members of the Al Qaeda network of carrying out the attack under the orders of Osama bin Laden.

Caption: Ash, smoke and shattered glass rained down on lower Manhattan following the destruction of the World Trade Center. For months after the September 11 attacks, rescue workers continued to work in thick dust, clearing the site, which came to be known as Ground Zero. The collapse of the twin towers, and buildings below destroyed by falling debris, killed almost 3,000 people. Initial estimates of a higher death toll fell as authorities identified who was and was not at the center that morning. The dead included more than 300 New York Fire Department members.
